I’ve been kicking the tires on this project for years now, going back to my first experiences with online media in 2022. I’ve worked with a couple different CMS tools and I’ve finally made the decision that I’m going to build my own. Build in Public is the title for this chapter (in life, politics, and tech). It’s drawn from a new community that is popping up doing what is referred to as Vibe Coding – informal project based coding done with the assistance of AI tools.
I’m writing this as a way to see how much my knowledge base will grow over the process and to ensure that the continued posting holds be accountable. I began last night with a long conversation with Gemini and O3 asking about two things. First is a content a public facing news website. The public facing page is the longer term goal. In order to build a different type of news ecosystem, we need to build a different type of news website.
Today has been a crash course in the different file types, dependencies, hosting and how all the pieces will fit together. The advice that has been offered by the two AI guides has been for the most part straightforward, but what is really helpful is the deeper explanations when asked for clarity. I now understand what a VPS is (and have acquired a basic one). The next step on the agenda is to figure out NodeJS and see if I can build something that is both sustainable and lasting.
Objectives for this week:
A basic foundational news site
An understanding of the broader VPS ecosystem
A skeleton for the interactive components of the system
A plan for the objectives for the next week.
Target: Fully Functional May 15th
